The hills are alive

by Kaizaad Kotwal

As though the classic 1965 Rodgers and Hammerstein film The Sound of Music were not gay enough, that they had to gay it up even more with a Sing-Along Sound of Music.

This cult phenomenon from England is coming to Columbus for 13 shows December 26 through January 6 and it promises to give audiences a lot to sing about. It is an interactive musical extravaganza where audiences get to sing along with the film and talk back to the characters à la The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The film's songs are subtitled, for those who have not already gotten the whole libretto memorized, and the audience usually shows up dressed as their favorite character from the film. Look for lots of nuns in drag, grown-ups dressed as the Von Trapp kids in lederhosen, or worse yet, those uniforms made from brocaded curtains.

This bizarrely funny tour is celebrating

the 35th anniversary of the movie, which won five Academy Awards, and became one of the most popular films of all time.

The evening begins with an on-stage host who leads the crowd through group activities in preparation for the sing-along and introduces the complimentary audience “Fun Packs" of themed props. There is even a oneof-a-kind costume contest each night so if you missed reveling in Halloween this year. you still have time to get all dressed up with somewhere to go.

"Sing Along" has been very popular with families and gay audiences alike, certain to make this show one of your favorite things. The hills of Columbus--all right, the plainswill come alive with the Sing Along Sound oj Music at the Capitol Theatre at the Vern Riffe Center, December 26, through January 6.

Tickets are $22.50 with a $5 discount for seniors and students with valid I.D. and a $10 discount for children 12 and under. Call 614469-0939 or 614-431-3600 for tickets. show times and other information.
